They are both good in their own right. The question is what are your personal talents and interests? What do you want to do with the education you receive? I’m sure there are nice opportunities for either side. Just as I am sure that you can guess which side I chose with a URL like.
However, while honing in your chosen direction don’t lose site of Web 2.0 technology like Social Networking and Social Bookmarking. Going into the future Web 2.0 will become more important than SEO; however, I personally believe SEO will remain an important part of Internet Marketing at least for the foreseeable future.
Further, I am only guessing that you mean as it relates to a career path. If that’s not the case please post your question on my forum and I’ll do what I can to further address it.

obviously “search engine optimization” has wonderful scope and future…
If u r excellent enough in uncommon alogorithms and creative enough wit C and Pearl.. no doubt.. u shud opt Search Engine Optimization.
